We spent some time at the Air School where school is delivered to
Australian children over 50 miles from school. These children are as
far away as 1,000 miles. Children must be on line from 8-3 Monday
through Friday except for holidays. All students come to Alice Springs
3 times a year ( a week at a time) to visit with their classmates. The
teacher visits each home one time a year. The home must have a tutor
to constantly monitor progress and they take instruction from the
teacher. The tutor is usually the Mother- 80% of the time. If a tutor
is hired they are paid about $30,000 and room and board from the
family. Air School starts at 4 1/2 and is completed in grade 9. After
that the students go to boarding school or they take correspondence
classes. The school is distinguished as their students generally score
in the top 10% of Australia.

ReplyDeleteSatellite internet service is provided to families by the Australian government at a cost of $30,000 per family. Since the families have no utilities, diesel generators are used to access internet service. Families pay $100 startup fee and $300 to maintain the program.
